I saw someone else post about this and I must ask. converting from 470 to a 160 l6, how much trouble would this be? I can get one for cheap locally but it would probably need a rebuild. Is it worth getting for a conversion down the road? My drive is also a 470 with 1.84 ratio but would I need to change gears when the hp is close? Thanks guys

Biggest thing to check is clearance. The inline six is quite a bit longer. I recently did this on a boat that had a 4 cylinder. Quite a bit of reworking of the floor had to be done to make it fit - including a new "dog house."

Did you replace for better performance or just to get rid of the pesky 4? I have about an extra 8"of space in front of my 470, would this be cutting it close or do I need more room? Thanks guys!

Ayuh,... My Guess is you'll probably need more like 18"s...

But that's just a Guess...

Couple of other things to consider here, you will be adding a couple of hundred pounds to the stern of the boat, for no significant power gain. Probably will need a significant amount of modification to the hull to get it to fit (floor motor mounts shift cables etc). If you are looking at rebuilding anyway, why not just rebuild the 470? You could probably get a good used 470 for less than the rebuild and it is a weekend drop in, part out the old one for some cash. Is it worth it for a 20+ year old boat? Just some thoughts. Good luck.

Re: Another 4 - 6 question

after reading all of this, I suppose if it was easier then I would probably attempt it but it seems a but more troublesome than it is worth. I'm going to get the engine anyway just because it is so cheap. My 470 doesn't need a rebuild yet, very low hours-the timing chain tensioner doesn't even have wear marks yet; but it was just poorly maintained and it sat for a while that makes it kind of a pain. I'm in the process of taking care of the infamous coolant leak I just need a day of warm dry weather! I need the alternator conversion and then I suppose I'll run er till she dies. I guess I was just trying to imagine all that would be involved with switching from the 4 to 6, but of course I didn't think of everything! Thanks guys for your suggestions and information!

That may take longer than you think. LOL Mine is 24 years old (had it for 20) So far 1 head gasket (+valve job), 2 regulators (changed to alternator after second), 1 little exhaust manifold plug, new seals (9 years ago), 3 starters (changed to GRPM works fine), not so bad:rolleyes:. Keep it cool and it should last a long time. BTW if you are putting in the alternator kit, there is no need to reinstall the stator. I left the regulator in place and just removed all of the wires. good luck:D
