Wipper,

Do you have the solor panel (eye) on the dash of your truck that recognizes when it is daylight or dark.

If so, cut a coffee can in half. Mount a 12volt bulb in the bottom of the can. attach a cigarette lighter plug to the wires on the 12 volt bulb.

When you start to back down the ramp plug it in and place the can over the light sensor.

It is worth a try maybe. Just don't leave it on while you go fishing. Might burn your dash.

If it works you heard it here first.......

I too find the lights a major problem when launching. Heck, I still have problems backing the boat in during the middle of the day if I want to be totally honest. ;) But, I am learning. I also have a vehicle that is under warranty and the headlights stay on all the time unless you have applied the emergency brake. The last thing I want to do is make it difficult for someone to see. I was raised like all of you, you think of others first, then yourself. I would not want to mess with a vehicle under warranty either. I just make sure to apply the emergency brake as soon as possible. If there are any design engineer's out there that are familiar with design to production, and pattons, I may have an idea. Ranger
No that I don't have the "twilight sentinal" option as schematic called it either. So that idea won't work. Thanks anyway. They are just on all the time.(only when the truck is running of course) That's it. Fortunately though most of my launching is done in the day time. Once the boat is in the water it's there for the weekend. I will look at that switch option but later when the warranty runs out a bit. Today I'm off to the boat show. I'll be dreamin all day long now.

I let a friend of mine read this post that has the same concerns about the ability to back your trailer into the water without hitting anything or getting into a fight with the guy next to you. (He was with me that night that this all happened) With him being a Dodge owner, his comment was "Does the lights go off when you turn off the ignition?" I told him I thought so. He then says "Leave it up to a Chevy owner to come up with optional ways to shut off the lights," Wouldn't it be easier to shut off the ignition? He then said, " I'm sorry, I forgot that once a Chevy is started, it is always a question if it will start again, and of course you don't want a dead vehicle on a busy launching ramp. So I think that if you want to abide by any rules on any ramp area, Simply shut off your switch. (unless your affraid your tow vehicle won't start! Good Day All! :D

Gents:
Its very easy to modify the lighting system to keep the running lights off with a switch. I'm talking any system.

I'm worried about the legal implications in the event of an occurance related to visiblity. I admit I have modified a few under duress, but I had the customers sign a waiver right on the work order. Still don't make it right....but I'm paranoid...seen too many court cases.

Schematic,

Guess you have to worry about the Mounties?

Daytime driving lights are REQUIRED North of the border but not down here.
