Recently picked-up a 1990 Bayliner Ciera with a 5.8l Ford and Cobra drive. Engine kills when shifting and before I tried all of the excellent cable-adjusting suggestions on the Forum, I manually tripped the Shift Interrupter Switch and the motor died, not just stumbled. Idled smoothly at 800 rpm in neutral and 650 in gear. New points installed. I may have other problems with the ESA assembly, would like to get the engine to "stumble" manually first. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

It should just stumble. Does it look like the previous owner did any creative re wiring? You could unplug the ESA and see if it still kills the engine as a check.

Possible the shift cable is bad.
Did you just touch it or hold the switch down?
