Still trying to get the pins out of my 1966 Merc I 150

The right pin did not have the nail in it, so i was able to head up the housing and punch it through without a problem.

The left pin is giving me hell. First off the nail hole in the pin is small, 7/64", someone tried to knock the nail though, so the head is no longer visible, and what little bit was bent over in the slot in the back, broke off when i bent it up to try and pull it.

So I drilled down the bolt hole of the pin, and drilled through the nail to break it. I figured break the nail in the middle, drill out the front remaining piece of the nail, and try and muscle it through.

I drill out the front, I think i got the nail but its hard to tell, and broke the bit in the housing while I was at it.

Got the oxy/act torch out, heat out the house, pound on it, still not budging.

Anyone have any other ideas I can try?

The only other thing I can think of is to drill the front hole larger, try and see if i can see the hole in the pin, get a long 7/64" bit and hope to God I can drill through the pin to get the other half of the nail.

Any ideas?

Ayuh,... Get it as Hot as you Dare too,+ throw Cold Water on it,... Quench it...
Concentrate on the area where the pin goes thru the pin...
Then bathe it in pen. oil,+ try beating the lockpin out with a proper sized pinpunch...

has anyone ever sheared off the lock-pin but beating on the main pin? I have on side of the nail drilled out already, its only held up on the left side of the pin.

I would just drill all of the way through the nail. Then use the puller on a slide hammer to get the pin out if it still won't budge.

As soft as the nail's are I'd think a proper slide hammer would yank it right thru.

I'm think we need a thread here for "who thought this was a good idea" engineering on some of these things...

Re: Another Hinge Pin Question

I had a similar situation....
The problem with drilling the pin is that the casting of the gimbal ring is as soft as the pin (or softer) & makes the drill drift....
After much effort, I ended up drilling the pin itself, just like a broken bolt...
Once you drill enough out, you can see in & if the back part of the nail is the hold up.....
I finally had to drill it out almost completely, (with a cobalt bit) as the pin is HARD & make four small cuts to remove it all the way...
The back part of the nail came out easily after that....
I caution against beating on the gimbal ring or using excessive heat....
If you crack the gimble ring, you are in for a real chore....
Hope this helps....;)

Re: Another Hinge Pin Question

Just got mine back togetter..installed a new trim limit switch(yup the one that has been out of stock for 35 years..98 bucks.. ouch)...the hinge pins (Nails) are now larger so your drilling it out was probablly a good thing....
