when the hood is on it doesn't exactly choke the engine it just doesn't seem to run as high of rpms. I have sprayed both the gaskets above and below the exhaust adapter near the power head with soap and water but saw no bubbles or leak. could the same symptom be caused by leaking exhaust housing seals that are near the water pump and lower unit?

I will check the hood latch in the morning to see if it's grounding the plug wires. but if it was that i would expect more of a power loss than what i experienced.

any ideas would be helpfull

Yup, that was the seal that was bad on our 100hp. The big rubber seal between the leg and the lower unit. Ours was deformed, so we used some RTV black sealant and the old seal and it did the trick. We had no problems running the last 3rd of a tank dry on the water. The air intake on ours is directly underneath the carbs. If you feel under and behind the center latch ( carb side of the cowl ) you'll feel what seems like some kind of screen. I don't know what that is for exactly, but the air hits that and then is pulled to the sides. I think that screen acts like the hairs in your nose...just there to catch the large debris/ things like floating seeds from cottonwood, etc.

The screen is for silencing.

Ah, well that would make some sense. Kind of a weird way to introduce air, but hey, as long as it works, right?

Re: another "hood choking engine" question

well i'm the idiot
i only tested the motor on muffs while looking for the leak, which didnt provide the back pressure needed to make the powerhead to adapter gasket leak at that time. only did it in the water. I should have used my most usfull tool...my brain, but i left that someplace else. I might have stepped on it and broke it:)
after tearing it down i noticed on the port side, the powerhead to adapter bolts were not as tight as the starboard side and that the gasket was sticking out some. so gaskets are on order. hopfully someone will read this that are having the same problem and learn from my absent mindedness.

thanks everone for your help
