Another "how much oil" question. Not covered in FAQ

We were planning to start our 1988 4 hp deluxe evinrude in the barrel today. Upon looking at the SELOC manual that covers 1.25 to 60 hp, we found that it said use 50:1 for the break in, and 100:1 after that. Dad seems to think that that is not enough oil. I read in the FAQ's that the small engines need to have more oil. Say 40:1 instead of 50:1. But, that only covered the mid 70's outboards. Which is correct?

Re: Another

Use 50:1.

OMC backed off of the 100:1 recommended in the 80s and told us to use 50:1.

Your 1988 4hp is "fully jeweled" with low friction bearings so the reservation about using 50:1 in the small engines (that was reserved for the sleeve bearing engines of the 60s and early 70s) doesn't apply.

Thanks. We got the carb fixed and it ran great in the barrel. Took it out to the lake and it started first pull and didn't miss a beat. Love Johnnyrudes.

bassboy,

50:1 is definetely correct. Make sure you use TCW-3 outboard oil only.

Replace the impeller too.

Yes, we used the pennsoil marine. It is the TCW-3 certified. And, the impellar was most likely changed recently. The guy we bought it from, bought it from a widow. He then took it to a boat shop to get it serviced. He used the motor once, and got stranded because it wouldn't start. He decided it was too much trouble and sold it too us. The only problem was, that a little particle had gotten into the carb. So, theoretically, it has been replaced less than two months ago. Before we used it we ran it in a bucket. It pumped water well.
