another identifying motor problem

I was giving a motor thats been sittin around for years of course theres no model# plate.the # on the welch plug is j2395286 theres a # on the flywheel its 304736 and one on the shift lever thats 378609 its a 2 cylider with recoil and eletric start starter is a autolite mdo4002m<br />have no idea of year or hp

Welcome to Iboats, TP602!<br />This is a Johnson right?<br /><br />That serial number indicates the engine comes from the early 60s. Most likely before '64. Since you say it's got a starter, that can only be one of three outboards - the 18hp, the 28hp, or the 40hp. The 18hp had it's model number tag on the side of one of the transom clamps - there's no way you would miss it. But the 40hp and 28hp had their name plates between the two transom clamps, up on top of tilt-swivel bracket. Since grime tends to collect there, sometimes the nameplate isn't obvious. Have you checked there?<br /><br />If not, lets narrow down the HP. Which does it most look like:<br /> '62 Johnsons, click here.

paul thanks for helping it looks like the 18 hp it has tiller steer an opening on top for the recoil rope and i can see on the side of the tramson mount where the model plate was.can i email you some pictures

It's either a '62 or a '63. Before '62 the choke & mix controls were up on a panel above the lower shroud. After '63, the red high speed mixture control was not present.<br /><br />The problem is, I have no idea which one it is. I *think* the '63 had it's fuel pump mounted to the top intake bypass cover rather than the bottom like on the '62 (and your one). Hopefully someone can confirm. But otherwise, I know of no telling differences.<br /><br />EDIT: Found one last serial number which indicates yours is in the 1963 serial number group. I wasn't too sure about that fuel pump business.
