Hey there. So i have a couple other posts going but have been resolved. The last issue with this motor is that it doesn't spit out any water, causing the motor to overheat. I checked the impeller and it seems to be good. Wondering if maybe the cooling ports could be clogged. Anyone know the best way to check that?

So i was just going over the video i took of it running. She is idling real good. I noticed that it sprays water when running at high idle but not low. Could it just be that the impeller is worn just enough to not be affective? Kinda hoping that's true and i guess out would be the easiest to test... Replace impeller. Sometimes i guess you just gotta ask someone else for you realize the answer yourself.

In addition, look for a plug up underneath the powerhead at the top of the leg -- looks about like a lower unit drain plug, if your model has it. If you take out the plug you can use the opening as a flushing port -- take it off briefly while the engine is running, and you should get a strong flow if the pump is working. The plug is situated up at the end of the water tube.

The ports on the leg varied a little in style. I believe my '57 ports on the sides, not the rear. In any case, it would be worth running a small wire or tube in to clear -- a little carb spray can sometimes help as a solvent, using the plastic nozzle. They get blocked up, particularly with salt water running. (But don't spoil the paint with the carb cleaner.)

I believe it was just the impeller. I took it off and looked at it again. The water coming out of the ports is a lot cooler now. Lesson learned here, when in doubt change it out, and looks are deceiving as there was some water coming out of the ports before just might not have been enough. It is running cooler now though. Thanks everybody. I have attached a link to my youtube video if you want to check it out. I got it running a little smoother than shown here too. Idles real low. There is a few videos I have posted on this one and my '54 15 hp evinrude that I have been working on as well. I need to post final videos with them fully tuned and on the lake as well yet. I wish I would have done a progress video though. hindsight is always 20/20.

'54 15 hp evinrude. I also have a '57 7.5 johnson that is just about as perfect as you can get.

In your first video with the 3hp I do not think you have it deep enough in the water for the water pump to work as designed. When running in a bucket I think the water pump should be fully submerged. So the bulge above the cav plate should be below the water line.

Ran it in a deeper barrel (same as the 15) and had it sitting in deeper as well. Same result. Ended up changing it since I had ordered it anyway. Problem solved. Good spot though. The 15 had also just gotten too low on water in this video but that impeller was replaced too. This way I know when they were new.
