The problem I have with manual #4 is that is has a section only on power steering and I only have manual which is the reason why I was assuming #5 was applicable to my drive.

If you have a problem with your steering, why don't you just ask, and tell us exactly what the problem is.

Re: Another link/copy of manual #5?

Thanks Don but I'm the type of person that like to read up on manuals and try to figure it out. I basically had to do this for 16 years in the Navy since most equipment we have on ships we don't learn about in school's.

Well......since I'm on here.....the steering seems "locked". I can't turn the wheel either to port or stbd with the drive either up or down, engine running or stopped. This is my second boat and first I/O and not sure how steering works on this particular boat and not sure where to start which is the reason why I was questioning about the manuals. The boat has been sitting for about 5 years so I haven't done any lubrication as of yet which I can only imagine may be a problem. I noticed a few zerk fittings on the drive and transom assembly and I don't know what type of grease I should use. Due to my lack of knowledge of this system that's about all of the details I can think of. As usual many thanks to all!!

Disconnect the steering cable nut where it hooks to the aluminum tube on the transom shield and see if the wheel will turn. Most of the time the inner portion of the cable is corroded and frozen in the aluminum tube.

Thank you Sir!! Getting a little late here in Va so after work tomorrow I will perform your suggestion. In case the cable is corroded and frozen what would be the next step?

Re: Another link/copy of manual #5?

If it is frozen, disconnect the link, use some heat on the aluminum tube and dead blow mallet to knock the cable out of the tube. once the cable end gets flush with the tube, a hard wood dowel and hammer will drive it out. You DO NOT want to hit the cable end with a hammer and flare it out or you will have even more problems.

PS: Absolutely none of that is in the manual.

Nut A is for the cable, B and C just hold the aluminum tube in the right place.

Outstanding, thank you gentlemen! Supposed to be a beautiful day tomorrow here in SE Virginia. Good day for this nut to kick my butt!

FYI: Seems I've been promoted to Seaman Apprentice. For the record I've always been an engineer so I left boot camp as a Fireman Apprentice and then a Fireman. Just a little something for the forums' current and former squids!

The steering cable nut is disconnected from the tube and the steering wheel still does not turn. Actually the steering wheel does turn both port and stbd about 1/4 turn and that's about it. I disconnected the link rod and still no joy. At this point should I go ahead and remove the cable from the tube as described above? Many thanks.

I got the cable out of the aluminum tube with ease actually. There was still a good about of grease on the portion of the cable that slides within the tube. Still no joy with the wheel.... Could it be seized in the helm?

Thanks Don, I really do appreciate your time and assistance. Now where to start? How can I tell if I have a rotary or rack and pinion? I understand that I need to measure the cable and I have read how to do it. Whether I have the rotary or the rack and pinion I imagine I would have to buy the respective package/kit which includes the cable, helm assy, and associated hardware?

Go to the link I posted and start looking at the different types of systems. There are pictures. Or just take a picture behind your dash and post it.
