I have a Johnson 20hp outboard that runs, but I would like to tune it up a bit as it could sure use one. I wanna order a manuel, points, condenser, and water pump. I see where the model # plate used to be and the freeze plug has the numbers J3115477.

Is there anyway anybody here can tell me the model year at least. Or will I have to call a marina to find that information out?

Thanks,

Al

Can't really tell from only the serial number. A dealer can look it up. My guess would be 1969 based on the motor cover.

Hi alhersch. I have a 20 hp too. Mine is a '66 is looks virtually identical to yours except it is all white. I think yours is a '68 based on the color, which I believe they only did for that year. You can verify the exact year by checking the ID tag riveted on the transom clamp. It should be on the opp side, but same location, as I have circled on your pic. It should say FD-XX. Mine a '66 FD-20C. An FD-21 would be for '67, an FD-22 would be for '68 and so on. I just brought mine back from the grave. It wasn't bad at all. You can get virtually any part(s) you may need right here at iboats and/or by ordering them from your local NAPA auto parts store, which sells Sierra replacement parts. If they don't have them in stock they can usually have them in the store the next day for no charge. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the help!

I see where the ID tag used to be but there is not ID tag on this motor. That's the reason i'm having a hard time finding the year on this guy. I never thought it was this old and still runs this good!! I am finally starting to get back to this motor and might use it instead of selling it. It's been sitting outside out back for at least 2 years without running. I pulled it out and put a tank with fresh gas on it. Took a little bit but I got it fired up and it ran like normal!!! We have a tiller handle on the way so I can use this motor on my boat. I purchased a carb kit a few years ago for it, but now i'm not so certain the kit is the correct one. If it runs good i'm not to sure i'll even take the carbs apart!

it's a 68-70, they're just about identical anyways so it doesn't really matter if you dont get the exact year
