Hey guys I have an OMC 800 (1985) 350 ci motor. 22ft cuddy cabin One more note I did put a new prop on that I ordered from here and it seemed to handle great.
Engine and lower unit all redone in 07' bought this boat a couple of months ago and have only taken it out a couple of times. Well yesterday was the first time taking it out into the river and had to tilt the motor up to make it past some points so that is why I noticed this now.
But when I run the lower unit all the way down it sounds and works great the instant I take the tilt up a bit it starts with a clicking noise while the prop is turn it does it a bit more in reverse then forward but there is still a noise as soon as I put it back down then the noise goes away.
The noise starts as soon as I'm an inch off of the all the way down position.
Thanks guys.
I'm still getting use to this neutral set up as it is a bit different not use to having to pull the shifter for neutral All my other boats I've had was just throttle back into neutral.

Ayuh,.... That's the ball gears eatin' themselves....

On stringer drives, that's a Tilt(No run),... Not a Trim.....

Ok so basically do not run it at all with it up not even the slightest bit correct. If so thanks for the information it means alot.
Also in other words do not go anywhere where that unit can not run without being all the way down.

Yes it is the ball gears making that noise. My manual says you can run with the drive tilted up ONLY for as short a period as possible (to clear an obstical ) and ONLY at a power no greater than necessary to move the boat.

So in other words, IN AN EMERGENCY ONLY!

"Also in other words do not go anywhere where that unit can not run without being all the way down."

This would be your best bet. :D

Definitely agree with everyone else that you should never run the drive tilted up at all.

Another thing you're probably hearing is the louder exhaust that's not being directed through the drive anymore when you tilt it up. There is no bellows for the exhaust like in the Merc or Volvo, so as soon as you start tilting the drive you break the seal between the drive & intermediate where the exhaust exits the boat into the outdrive which causes it to get noisier (like when your muffler falls off your car).

You can probably ignore my post. I see you mentioned clicking noise while underway in the water so the exhaust noise isn't what you're hearing. Definitely the ball gears.
