Hi all;
I am new to the forum, looks like a great site for information on my boat.

I recently acquired a 98 Larson 176br I/O, I intend to take it out next week for a brief shakedown cruise on a large lake here in GA.

I have had one older boat, a Glastron for a number of years and enjoyed it very much, but the family got a little bigger and the Glastron finally just has worn out.

I have all the owner's manuals and will get the rest of the boat documentation next week, the boat is in pristine condition with very low hours, it was started and ran for a small cruise last week with no issues.

I have all the safety equipment and refreshing myself on the boating regs in the area, All my "wheeled" vehicles are maintained by me and I am familiar with the mechanicals of cars and trucks. I restore classic cars and have a drag car that I built.

I have some questions and looking for some advice on the following:

1. Are there factory service manuals for Larson boats? If so, are they available online somewhere?

2. All my vehicles have their own "tool" boxes with such things as extra belts, hoses, etc, I was wondering if folks here had some "favorite" things to always have handy when using your boat?

3. My boat has a Volvo engine, I will have to check which size, I believe it is the 3.0, but will verify that, I read several posts with some good comments on the engine, anything I should particularly watch for? Are there any TSB's for this boat or drive train?

4. I intend to use it most for cruising, tubing with my two sons, and a little fishing, any particular recommendations for such things as cleaners, oils, fuel additives? I will probably use the boat 6-10 times through the summer and fall, then winterize it.

5. It is stored inside, I have a trickle charger for it already, any tips for winterizing would be helpful.

Thank you in advance for your time

welcome aboard. first verify what engine you have and what outdrive. there are separate service manuals for each. then post you questions on the powertrain, in the inboard outboard forum. as far as manuals for the boat, contact the manufacturer. watch the bellows, and exhaust manifold.

post a pic of the motor but if it is a 3.0 probably has the front motor mount where the belt has to pass the mount . bolts on the starboard side must be removed.install a belt in your spare time around the mount and use a plastick tie to keep it out of the way of the pulleys that way if your belt goes 2 minutes u can have the spare belt on tough to do with a boat load of people in the heat on the water.keep a 1/2 open combination wrench on board with a small piece of pipe for leverage on the alternator.i have small tool box on board how long the box is is the size on the pipe maybe 18" spare prop a must if u mess up your prop nice to have one onboard slip pliers for changing the prop.i keep a slotted,phillips screwdrivers,knife,duct tape,black electrical tape,a small bottle nail polish,spare cotter pins ss for prop,about 18 " piece of good electrical wire if i have to jump the starter never did but my friend did and he didn't have a piece on his boat,jumper cables,bought mine at wal-mart in plastick bag with zipper it came that way cheap maybe 5 bucks.i have a spare washer for the prop.starter fluid.couple rags,i keep a regular pair pliers with the handles wrapped in black electrical tape.a few plastik ties.
