Hello again, I have a Johnson 5 from about 1999 that I use quite often on a small dinghy. I hadn't run it for a couple of months though so I thought i'd start it and run it for 10 minutes in a bucket. No water came out of the telltale even though the leg was well in the bucket and the pickup was about 8 inches under water. After a while steam started coming out of the telltale. I stuck the hose into the bucket and sprayed a jet of water directly at the pickup and water began dribling out of the telltale and continued to do so after I removed the hose. After I stopped and restarted the motor the steam happened again until I used the hose 'trick'. Obviously there is no blockage but i'm wondering if the impeller is at fault but if it is, why does it work after I give it a kickstart with the hose?

I would replace the impeller. Then we know that it isn't at fault. These need replaceing every couple of years anyway.

Thanks Lark. I suppose that is the obvious solution and the impeller is the original one so probably about time. It just confused me that I could make it work with a jet of water. it's hard to know for sure exactly what goes on under the waterline. It's a great little motor so I don't want to kill it.

I'm at The Gap. Nowhere near the water I know. I work not far from Brekky ck so might call in one day. Mine are hardly refurbished but pretty good paint and perfect decals so I thought i'd keep them in unrestored condition. If it comes about that I have to scavenge off the earlier one i'll still keep it complete with all the bad parts, paint it and stick it in the living room.

You'd have to be the closest Iboat member to me than, I'm at Lawnton, just down the road from the Pine River.
