Is it a machined hole? And are you sure it LU oil? And not burned oil and exhaust and water residue?

A Very frequently asked question. Make sure it's gear oil before you freak out. Some of the oil you put in the gas is burned (smoke) and the rest goes out with the exhaust/cooling water. Think of it: if the oil was 100% burned, there would be no lubrication of the cylinder in the exhaust ports area....where it needs it the most. Those weep holes are drain holes to prevent water from sitting in the low cavities and the mentioned fuel/oil mix comes out there too.

Check the gear oil and if it is full and there is no water in there, find something else to worry about.

That is not good. Does sound like you may have some water intrusion. Have you been changing the gaskets on the drain and vent screw? That is the number 1 spot for water intrusion. If not, change them, use full synthetic lu oil, test run it and see if the problem was solved. The water will sit at the bottom of the oil, so if you remove the drain screw briefly you will be able to tell if there is water due to its milky colour. If not you may need to pressure test it to find the breach, or simply re seal the entire lu.

To pressure/vacuum test a lower unit:

a) drain the gear oil
b) use an appropriate adapter with a gauge tee'd in to apply pressure or vacuum. No more than 15 psig for pressure. You can use a bicycle pump or any other compressed air source for pressure. For vacuum, you need a vacuum pump.
c) LU should retain some pressure or vacuum for 45 minutes minimum.
d) If pressure doesn't hold, submerge LU in water to find leak source [possibilities: drive shaft seal, prop shaft seal(s) (usually two), shift shaft seal and the fill/drain screw washers.]
e) replace offending seal(s) as required.

I think you should change the lower unit oil, use new drain screw seals, and run it a few times and recheck it. Don't reuse the old ones and screw the drain screws in really tight (something I once liked to do), go to the local shop--they're pretty universal and cheap. If you didn't see any water when you took out the bottom drain screw and the lower unit oil didn't seem creamy or water droplets in it, I think it may be not as bad as you think. I suspect you saw that nasty exhaust gunk and like me, got a little nervous. If after a run or two, the l.u. oil is milky, you'll know for sure and only be out a few ounces of l.u. oil. Changing those seals is a pretty good pain to get just right.

50:1 Use TC-W3 outboard oil and regular unleaded.
