I have a boat that I'm going to be replacing the floor and transom in, and maybe (hopefully not) the stringers. Here's a pic. I paid $800 for this boat. The motor runs great has good compression, etc. But, it ain't stayin' on this thing. I want to go much faster than this will push it. It did do 40 mph on gps, though. And that's without power trim and a dinged aluminum prop. I'm thinkin' I'll be closer to 52 with my '87 I-6 Merc 115 and a Laser II prop. I'm looking at powering up even from there: A v-6 135. The trailer is SHOT. It's going to the steel scrapping yard as soon as I get another trailer.

If I use plywood and vinylester I'm looking at about 700-800 dollars for the whole project. If I use high density foam for the floor and transom - which will NEVER absorb moisture or rot - I'm looking at about 1200 to 1300 dollars. I was talked into using vinylester resin as opposed to polyester because it is easier to work with and is more forgiving if a mistake is made. Other opinions? Money IS an object; I don't have a large amount of cash to do this with. Anyway, I'll be posting pics as the project takes shape. Have to sell my OTHER boat before I begin, though. Here's a pic of that:

Peace all.

Poly is not that hard at all to work with. Just mix it close to the ratio and your set! That boat is gonna look sweet with your 115 on there! Nice score! Keep us posted as well.

i believe you will over power with the 135. the 115 merc will be a great improvement of the 85 Force.

I agree, keep both boats, you can never have too many boats. One day you may want to rip around the lake and the next you may want to go fishing.

I think tashasdaddy is right the 135 may be a little too much, those hulls can only take so much speed until they become unsafe.

Re: ANOTHER project

Can't keep both boats! Need the cash to fund the Avenger project. Besides, if I tried to keep both boats my wife would make sure I'd be SLEEPING in one of them!

LOL!!

BTW, that Beachcraft, with that 115 does 46 on gps. The pic doesn't do it justice. It is a 30 year old boat and looks like it is 5 years old. It even has a new transom. I listed it locally; no one bit on it at all. What's wrong with people? Oh well...

Check out this pic. This is a "project" boat that the owner is asking $400 for. To me the boat is land fill fodder, but the engine might sell for something, and look at the trailer! That's what I'm REALLY after to put under my Avenger. That trailer by itself would probably fetch $800.

Re: ANOTHER project

I went ahead and bought the boat/motor/trailer in the above pic. The motor came with a complete gasket set, pistion rings, and a new standard piston set. Not a good sign. That's okay, I paid only $360 for the thing and the trailer by itself is worth twice that. If I can sell the motor for parts only, along with the gasket set and piston, I'm ahead. The boat is going to the landfill.

Re: ANOTHER project

Got the boat home. Did a bunch of rigamorole to get the thing cranked to check for compression. Definitely a parts motor. One of the cyls measured 0 compression. I will be listing it along with some other stuff on eBay starting Tuesday. I'll post the links in case any of you are interested in at least taking a look.

Re: ANOTHER project

TG, post the picture again. didn't work. interested in seeing it. strip what you want off it, i sell all that stuff on ebay. pull the boat to the front yard and put a sign on to "FREE BOAT" thats how i get rid of landfill boats. just tow it over to there house and push it off the trailer. saves me the landfill fee. and our landfill charges extra for fiberglass etc.

Re: ANOTHER project

The link above doesn't work for you? If I click on it it takes me to all 3 of my Photobucket pics. I'll try to re-post it later. FREE BOAT... Good idea. I'm going to throw in a rusted out trailer, too. That way I don't have to push the boat off any trailer. Thanks!

Re: ANOTHER project

I sold the Merc. 1400 on eBay for $150 to a guy who rebuilds in-lines for a hobby. Took the old Jolly Roger and rusted out trailer to the dump and disposed of it for under $60. I kept one wheel/tire for a spare. The trailer I kept is a beauty. It's going to work out fine.

Some questions: Has anyone used polyurethane foam as core material in place of wood? I'm considering using 20 lb foam that is 1 1/2" thick for my transom, and 6 lb 1/2" inch think for the floor. The stuff NEVER rots, and is lighter and stronger than wood. It would also mean that I could use less glass/resin. Any thoughts?

BTW, check here often; as I get the project going I will post pics to my photobucket account.

bump

Please read the last post I wrote re. polyurethane foam as core material vs. marine grade plywood and respond as your knowledge allows. Thanks for any thoughts on this question.

Clear coat? Re-metal flake?

Clear coat? Re-metal flake?

My project is kinda stalled until I can sell the Beachcraft in the photobucket site above. But, the Avenger I'm restoring has metal-flake, and - you guessed it - the gelcoat is all but gone. I tried buffing out a small part of the hull and the white gelcoat came out really nice. The dark grey pin-stripe metal-flake looks good too, but the red got shiny and the color was not restored. I had read that if you put a drop of oil on a gelcoat-less metal flake, and the color comes back and looks 3D again, you can simply clear coat and it will look nice. So, I put a drop of oil on the part of the buffed out area and it looked good. So, I'm thinking of clearcoating the whole boat above the chines. One of the other options I was thinking about was to mask off the whole boat and ONLY clear coat the red metal-flake OR, paint over the red metal flake with a solid color like dark red. What are your thoughts on this? I'll try to get some close-up pics posted to my Photobucket page so you can see what I'm talking about. Thanks for any help.
