If I reduce the diameter of a 17 pitch prop from 14 in to 12 in. what sort of effect does this have? Is pitch effectively reduced or just efficiency or none of the above? I'm experimenting again, but would like to know what possible effects to expect and any benefits or drawbacks.

Re: another prop question

I have taken 1/4" off of aluminum props before beeing very carefull, but balance is the issue here. If you do it you will gain RPM, but by taking 1" off, you are going to remove an important design area and will probably ruin your prop.

But on the other hand, if you dont care about it, and you make a template for all the blades, go ahead and try it. Ive done lots of things in the past that everyone told me not to. Like buying an early Audi Fox, I regretted that the whole time I owned it.

Re: another prop question

Thanks Lubedude, but as I said this is an experiment with an old prop. I recupped it radically and it really bites at high jackplate levels but I lost a lot of rpm. Thought I might trim it down and recup it again, see if I can keep the bite but increase rpm.

Not to ruin your fun, but don't try to re-invent the wheel....if ya know what I mean.
Taking that much off is going to lower performance drasticly. The happy med. of high pitch/cup with decent diameter (not large) is usually most efficient.
