I have a 1987 mercruiser 260 alpha one gen 1. Does anyone know EXACTLY what type of gear oil and weight this thing requires. I keep getting different answers from different people I ask. What did Mercury require from the factory (Brand and weight)?

Well, that didn't work right. Merc makes everything damned near impossible anymore.

Re: Another question about Drive oil.

Ok, this is a copy and paste from the Merc site above if you can figure out how to get to the FAQ section on maintenance for sterndrives.
Basically Merc has 2 types of gear lube the premium blend (that you seldom see any more) and the Hi Performance gear lube.
Here is what they say.

High Performance gear lube is required in all Bravo and Alpha I Generation II sterndrives. It is recommended for use in all older sterndrives as well. Premium Blend and High Performance gear lube should never be mixed. Be sure to drain the unit completely if switching from one type of lube to the other.

Or you can just fill it full of something like Mobil 1, in 75W-90,.........

It's Fully Syn-oil,+ as Good or Better than anything Merc sells.............

That's what's in My drives........
