Another serial number question, help needed please

Requesting permission to come aboard Sir/Madam?

Hello everyone, my name is Chuck and by way of introduction I am a retired U.S. Marine and retired (medically) from my own company 2 years ago. I bought an Alumacraft 16 foot bass boat over the winter. I have replaced all the seats, the fish finder, prop, and pdf's. I have planned projects of replacing the carpet in the boat and painting the trailer on which I have already replaced the skids.

All this introduction brings me to my current problem. I checked the identication tag on my motor today and can not seem to find it listed anywhere. The motor in question is a 40hp oil injected 4 cylinder 2 cycle Mercury. I have checked the serial number twice and have got the same number both times (hey I'm an old man I forget before I can get to the computer). The serial number in question is OD120859.

I would appreciate any help in identifing this motor especially the year ect. I am so glad I found this website. Thank you advance for any help you can give, Chuck

Hey chuck, that number does not compute. suggest you take a magnifier out to serial plate and re-check. here to help marcel

Should be a 1992, from here http://maxrules.com/models/Merc_model_files/40-50.html

The first digit of the s/n is probably a zero not the letter o.
