I've got a Mercruiser 160 inline with pre-Alpha. Had the hard to shift to neutral problem. Am now struggling with adjusting shift cables. My question...what does the "lockout screw" on the shift interupt assembly do? It looks to me like it keeps it from operating! The Seloc manual says put it in (it was in) for EZ Shift models. How do I know if I have an EZ Shift model? Oh, the switch kills the engine when manually operated (it works). Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Bondo: Appreciate your quick response and have learned alot from your posts in the past. The lower shift cable seems to operate smoothly. Any help on this lockout screw thing?

Does anybody out there know anything about the "lockout screw" located on the shift interupt mechanism?

David E.You've got me on that one, which isn't always hard to do.But you also got Bondo. Can you post a picture?
One other thought do you mean the stud the cable mounts on, , , ,that slides, and is adjustable?
Second thought,,, do you have a reverse lock valve ,,,,and is this the location of the lockout screw?
DHP

Re: Another Shift Problem

Okay, here's where the "lockout screw" is. Sorry I can't figure out how to post a picture. The Seloc manual shows this in the photos of the later manufactured units of the early model (pre '73). The screw is located in the triangular shaped piece that has the notch where the roller on the switch rests. The screw is located in the center of this triangular piece. In other drawings I've seen, it looks like there is a hole, but no screw in it. This looks to me like it stops the shift interupt from pivoting, or am I misunderstanding how the switch operates?

Also, the screw does not appear to be original equipment. No paint on it. Could the screw be something inadvertantly left in by the last owner/mechanic after working on the cables?

If you check OldBluMerc's post of June 24 you see the drawing on achris60's reply. The part I'm talking about is in the circle inset. Right smack dab in the middle of the part is the hole I'm talking about. On my boat there's a ss hex head bolt through that hole that seems to go into the transom plate.
