I'm in process of installing a set of Smart Tabs and removed the old hyrdofoil last night. I assume I should I fill the holes on the cav plate? Could I use some duct tape as a mold/dam to fill with JB weld then sand smooth? I assume it would stay in the hole depending on how much pressure the plate sees while in operation.

also...
Does it matter if the upper bracket is mounted on the left or right side of the actuator? The brackets on the tabs force the mounting of the actuator to be on the left and I would like to mount the upper bracket opposite due to interference and was wondering if this would be OK?

You can mount the brackets on either side of the plate bracket and you can flip the transom bracket over as well. You can do this independantly or together. If the transom bracket and the plate bracket are opposed to eachother then rotate the end fitting clockwise until they line up. If the boot wrinkels just work it into position.

As for the holes, I used the mounting screws and some sealant, and put the head of the srew on the bottom of the cav plate. You can fill them as you suggested as well. I do not think the pressure will push the weld from the hole.

I used a large countersink to taper the edges of the holes, top and bottom, applied some duct tape to the underside of the AV plate and filled the holes with epoxy from the top. Sand them down smooth when dry and paint if you wish. By coincidence the epoxy was a very close match to the Mariner grey and I didn't bother painting. With the countersunk edges the epoxy 'plug' can't be forced out.

Gave the tabs their first run Yesterday. I noticed the boat got on plane sooner than it used to, as expected. It also maintained a smooth ride while on plane, as expected. Another At-a-boy for Smart Tabs.

K
