Another speedometer question (?)

Own a '96 SS140 Skeeter with 120 HP Force. The speedometer does not seem to work properly. Added a few lbs of air pressure to the line and it acted like it wanted to take a read. What makes the speedometer tick? Does the pressure come for the motor itself? Anything I should be looking for to make this speedometer take proper reading? Please advise

Re: Another speedometer question (?)

The speedo gets it's pressure via a "pitot" tube off the back of the boat, it looks like a plastic stick, and it has a groove in it and a hole. The stick is hollow, the water (at speed) goes up the groove, into the hole, through the inside, then into a plastic tube on top of the pitot, then thru the plastic tube all the way up to your gauge.

Typically the pitot tube is on the transom. Look for a plastic thingy with a tube coming out of the top.

Re: Another speedometer question (?)

Speedo is nothing more than an air pressure gauge. Azfyrfyter63 has it pretty accurate, except the water does not travel all the way up this tube to the guage. I'd be surprised if more than a few inches of the tube get water at high speed...but at speed, the water in the end of the tube is getting forced in, pressurizing the air in the tube, and causing the needle to move at the guage.

If your boat doesn't have the little thing hanging on the transom he mentions, a lot of motors have the hole built right into the leading edge of the lower unit...I don't know about Force.

# 1 cause of speedo failure is gunk, lime buildup, or debris plugging the hole where the air pressure tube attaches at the back of the boat. Make sure the line and water intake hole allow air and water to travel freely, and make sure the tube is not kinked, rotted, or leaking anywhere. Usually you just need to disconnect the tube and clear it with compressed air and a stiff wire. The gauge on the dash is probably fine, but the tube is fragile and the opening in the motor or at the transom is prone to blockage.

You found it. Best way to clear it out is to disconnect the speedo hose and alternate compressed air into BOTH holes (the hole you found, and the hole where the hose hooks up) over and over again until nothing shoots out anymore. If you just pushed the gunk arond with a wire but it's still in there, or pushed deeper, you may find that it will clog up quickly again. But you're definitely on the right track and your speedo will probably work fine once you get it fully cleared.
