'76 Johnson 25 hp pull start. Wouldn't even begin to catch yesterday......just sounded dead. The carb was rebuilt last Oct and the boat hasn't been out much since but has been starting easily. Tested today and there is spark to both plugs.

At one point in trying to start it, my buddy or I knocked the fuel line off the tank and we didn't notice it. Is it possible that there is air somewhere in one of the fuel lines stopping fuel from getting to the carb?

Thanks,

Barry

If you put the fuel line back on and pump the bulb there should be no problem. Not sure what you have done since you knocked the line off. It should not come off either connection with out quite a blow. Does the bulb pump up tight? If not the connection at the tank may be damaged.

I agree, make sure your fuel bulb gets nice and firm. I would tap on the fuel bowl on the carb, your needle may be stuck shut. Also are your sparks big and blue? Ryan

when the carb was rebuilt, did it have a newer style needle put in? They have a small notch that a clip attaches to, and the other end of this clip attaches to the float. So when the float goes down when there is low fuel in the bowl, it pulls the needle down as well, to let fuel in. This way, the needle is not just pulled down by its own weight, but also by the weight of the float. So if this clip wasn't installed, the needle could be stuck up in the orifice. Just a possibility...

Couple of basic questions. Let's not leap ahead at this point.
How did you check for spark
Are the plugs getting wet after continued attempts to start ??
Is there a kill switch on this motor ??
Any other history on this motor could also be of great assistance.
