another thrust washer question.

i got my boat home today and noticed my new Ron Hill Siganture series prop was loose. a bit strange i thought. I put this prop on using a Quicksilver Flo-Torque hub kit(835270Q 1) on my volvo penta motor. It was tight when i installed it...put the thrust washer on, the plastic hub instert in and then the spline part along with the splined washer. put the nut on along with the cotter pin and nut sleeve for the cotter pin. I noticed the thrust washer has a little play with the prop, it is by no means tight, maybe a 1/16 - 1/8" worth of play. it fits on the prop shaft great...is this normal? do you have to retorque a prop after using it?

Thanks,

Ron

Don't know if it is normal, but I would check the torque on a brand new prop. after its initial run anyway. Retorque and see if it stays tight this time, maybe it wasn't seated properly somehow.......JK

Re: another thrust washer question.

I have a Glastron 175 SX-LE 3.0 L Volvo Penta SX drive. I installed a new prop also, the insert kit is for our 19 spline shaft, there are kit numbers that are specifically for the outdrive set-up we have. The insert kit number is 105.(for mine anyway)
The insert (plastic) has a rounded end and a flat end, make sure you have the insert installed correctly. Also, there is no play and I mean "0" clearance on my prop set-up. I cannot move the prop back and forth / up & down any at ALL. Did you install a new thrust washer for the new prop ??
Mine locks up tight ! I only have about 2 hours on the prop , but no issues at all. Can you tell me what brand of prop it is ? Give me the specifics and I'll check it out.

Re: another thrust washer question.

it is a Ron Hill Signature series 21 pitch 4 blade stainless. I am 100% positive i installed it correctly, I assume you used the Michigan XHS hub system....i used the quicksilver flo-torque system, either way, both should do the trick. If you take the prop off, is there any play where the thrust washer step meets the prop? if not, i think i may need a new thrustwasher....actually can anyone measure there thrust washer for a flo-torque hub with a volvo sx drive....that will tell me if i got the right thrust washer or not....my thrust washer part number is 12-835467-7

Re: another thrust washer question.

Don't really understand your question, I can take the thrust washer and place it in the prop, the shoulder sits firmly down in the prop. When your prop is installed, do you have any back & forth movement ?? or does it all compress tight ?
Did you replace the thrust washer when you replaced the prop ? Also. I went to Hill Marine, and looked at the hub kits, seems all of them have the same kit number ?? What is your kit number ?

Since we both have the same rig, I can take some measurement for you, just let me know.

Re: another thrust washer question.

when my prop is installed, i have wiggle it left to right and up and down, but i cannot push or pull the prop in or out. if that makes any sense...lol...when i take my thrust washer and place it in the prop, i got about 1/16" gap all around it, it doesnt fit snug at all...yes, i bought the prop and hub kit, just trying to figure out what part is not right. it was all tight when i installed it at the beginning of the weekend, checked it when i pulled the boat out and it had ALOT of play side to side....nothing is damaged...

Re: another thrust washer question.

Ok, the shaft is a given length, the washer is the base - goes on tight. Then the prop with insert, then the spline washer with nut will tighten it up - no up and down movement.

The only other way to get movement is within the hub insert itself. Does the insert move within the prop ? any at all ? The splined washer should prevent any abnormal clearance between the hub insert and the shaft. Sounds to me like you got a fit problem. DUH !! we know this :)
The shoulder on the thrust washer holds the base of the prop from having any movement. The splined washer at top prevents the opposite end from any movement. The nut prevents any axial movement.
So, if you can move the base of the prop left to right any at all the thrust washer is out of tolerance. Same this the solined washer at top.
The nut should take care of any up/down movement.

My washer does not have the clearance you speak of.

Re: another thrust washer question.

I really appreciate the help! the flo-torque hub kit i bought was 835270Q1, which is for a volvo sx drive. the thrust washer that was included is part # 12-835467-7, which is for a mercruiser, or maybe both.....my question is, my problem is that my prop doesnt fit snug on the shoulder of the thrust washer. see if these pictures help

Re: another thrust washer question.

thanks for the email...very interesting indeed. I had this prop on all weekend and it performed better than expected...48mph at 4800 rpm....maybe i am just making a bigger deal outta nothing...my guess is there isnt suppose to be any play, but its only 1/16" of an inch....i find myself on a mission to figure it out now...lol
