Hey all. i have a 87 3.0 mercruiser 140. Rough idel very rough . I rebuilt the carb with a kit from Mikes carburator and it runs better, no corn gas in the tank and about 4 psi on the fuel pressure. The carb was running terriable at idle before rebuild. Now hears the problem, its ideling too high at the moment , its a 2GC 7040084 and has a different bolt on pattern then most of the rochester 2 barell carbs. Most of the 2 brl are 2x3 3/4 mine is 2x3 1/2 ish.
So i move the linkage with the idle stop tight to the cam and the idle comes down, however i have to move linkage manualy which is leading me to think that there is a slightly small vacuum leak on this carb due to a leak on one of the components. I am fairly sure the rebuilt was spot on. It is a older boat so might be needs a new carb ( yes did all the on the water tune up stuff )
Heres my questions . Is there an adapter plate for the base bolt patterns ? If so does anyone know where to get it with out fabricating one ? I guess i would like to just buy a new carb thats only 100 bucks on amazon ( marine application) other than paying $400 for a new 2GC 7040084 style that seems to always be a problem on these motors.
Or is there a suitable 2GC 7040084 substitute ?

stay away from the amazon chinese junk carbs. many people have tried them, all went back to their old carbs.

doubt you need a new carb

you can test for leaking shafts, etc with a shot of carb cleaner or wd40 on the shaft/housing interface

Most likely since you can manually pull the throttle closed and it idles correctly, adjust your throttle cable to hold the throttle plates closed at idle. this is common. as the cable wears, you may need to adjust periodically.
