G'day guys.
Took the boat out into our local bay on monday, and gave it a full day's running. Since my last post, I replaced the fuel primer bulb again (the new one i bought had a check valve desintegrate). I also pulled and inspected the fuel pump. Couldnt see any pinholes and the check valves were good. Also checked the float / needle and seat. Two of the float's springs were compressed too far, and two of the needle/seats were lightly sticking. Replaced those. ($220 for all three needle/seats and floats!)
Now i have the problem of the engine running extremely smooth all the way through the rpm range, will start first kick hot or cold, but sits on 4800rpm at WOT. On my very first outing with the boat, I had it on 5500rpm.
Any thoughts? GPS read 32kts at 4800rpm heading into a small chop (3 adults on board and fairly loaded) Boat is rated to carry a max of 140hp outboard
I also have a few questions:
What size prop should be run on this (16ft Haines Hunter Half Cabin)
What sort of fuel consumption do other 83' 115hp inline 6 Merc users get?
Maybe as another noteworthy point, I noticed that the "pivot point" for the timing arm (i know thats not what its called, trying to describe what it does and where it is located on the powerhead) the bolt that runs through it was somewhat loose. So when the throttle was advanced, there was a bit of sloppy play on the timing push rod / arm. Tightened that up, and i'm sure that it would have contributed to the smoother running of the engine.
I bought new plugs and a Quicksilver decard spray can from the local merc dealer. The plugs that were in it when i bought it were the BUHW, cross referenced to the L76V. When i asked for plugs for my specific engine, he looked up the book and it said BUZHW. Seloc manual says that plugs can be updated, so i took his word for it. I havent run them yet, and from what i can see in the book, they are the same as the BUHW, but only with a slightly more extended centre electrode (maybe 1mm more) Has anyone come across this?
