Another Water Pee Hole Problem/Question

I am having an issue with the water flow. I have a 40 hp 1982 two stroke. I replaced the water pump impeller but still do not get a full strong water from the pee hole it just kind of dribbles out at idle and gets a little stronger at higher RPM but the water is cold. I took off the lower unit and blew air through the water tube and could feel the thermostat open and I got good air flow out the pee hole.
Once I shut the engine off I got a steady stream of warm water coming out of the center of the prop. Is this normal or do I have a problem?
I did make sure that when I put the lower unit back on that the tube was in the water pump housing.
I am really concerned as I do not want to blow the engine up and am leaving for vacation with the boat Friday. Can anyone please help?!?!

Re: Another Water Pee Hole Problem/Question

Is this the Mercury 40/402 motor or the Yamaha import(mariner)?

Re: Another Water Pee Hole Problem/Question

I have a 1979 40hp, and it has an incredibly strong pee stream. It is not cold or warm, but more of a room temp/lukewarm. As for the water coming out from the center of the prop, I haven't run mine on muffs in awhile so I cant remember how much comes out but some water does come out around the prop area on my motor. Your tell tale stream should be stronger than what you describe. You may have a blockage in the fuel pump where the water comes out. I would also recommend pulling the hoses off that the water travels through and replacing them.

Re: Another Water Pee Hole Problem/Question

I just had a simular problem with my 1973 1150, started to melt down #1 piston. after tearing it down I found a bunch of old water pump impeller pieces blocking off the port on the bottom of the head under the head cooling cover!! That is why they say to change your impeller yearly. and if you have one self destruct better to by a gasket set than try to find obsolte parts!! hope that helps.

Re: Another Water Pee Hole Problem/Question

Thanks for the advice.
When I replaced the old impeller it was still intact. and the water flow was Ok at times. If the impeller blades were bent back the wrong way would that affect it? If I try and flow water throuh the water tube should it go right through and out the pee hole or is there a thermostat? Is there a diagram showing where the water tube goes so I can check the lines?
Thanks again.

Re: Another Water Pee Hole Problem/Question

I would think that If the impeller blades are bent the wrong way it would effect it's operation and longevity. and yes there should ba a thermostat or your engine would run to cool. A good diagram would be great!! I bought a CD manual but it doesn't have any diagrams that I have found. I will check again tonight. Have you owned this boat since new?? When I changed the water pump the last couple times in the four years I have had my boat, the impeller has been intact. I can only assume that the rubber pieces were stuck in the water tube or other spots in the system, and decided to get togeather for a cylinder warming last weekend. And all the while the water was coming out the pee hole, but maybe not as strong as it should have, and my water pressure gauge dosn't work. ( I ordered one today!!) I think I am going to pull the power head off to check the water tube. better safe than sorry, not sure if I will get lucky next time!! Anybody know the exact route the water takes after it leaves the pump?? single route or split between head and crankcase?? might help me track dow the rest of the impeller parts. Again a good diagram even if hand drawn would sure help us Cadets.

Re: Another Water Pee Hole Problem/Question

Thanks again,
I looked at the area where the pee hole was and found it was connected to a "pod" on the side of the power head that appeared to have a line running to the fuel filter, possibly the fuel pump or thermostat. I saw that the tube was pretty well kinked as it had a pretty sharp bend in it. I took it off and blew through it and it was clear to the pee outlet. I then blew air back into it and saw that it pushed water out the bottom. I took the lower unit off again and found that the passage was clear to the pump. I put a new rubber tube in and made sure it wasn't kinked and put it all toether again. Now the water is streaming out very strong. It looks like this problem was the kinked hose. It is tough gettinformation on this age boat. I bought it last year and downloaded a mercury manual from the internet but it doesn't do a good job of breaking this stuff down and poor illustrations.
Does anyone think I need to check anything else??
Thanks to the forum members it really helps getting info from others who have had the same issues. Saves a lot of $$$ when you don't have to go the dealer.
