I just bought a flawless, mint 1976 85hp evinrude. It runs great and pumps a good amount of water in a barrel but the motor has been covered in a garage for 10+ years. The seller was a auto mechanic and he rebuild the carbs and did a basic tune up but did not change the pump / impeller. I dont want to risk putting it on open water and damage such a great motor. Can i replace just the impeller or should i replace the whole pump kit? He also has to find the service manual that he bought for the motor, but until then is there a specific write up on doing this project?

SRT,
My experience with my 55 3HP Evinrude and my 73 Merc you can replace just the impeller. I'm in the process of doing so on my 55 15 HP Evinrude as soon as I pick up some lower unit seals, have one leaking so I'll replace them all.

Re: Another water pump question

srt, lemme tell you something about that motor. We had a LOT of water pump failures resulting in burned-up powerheads back then. The hub would spin loose in the impeller and when it did you couldn't shut it off fast enough to prevent catistrophic damage. So you are very wise to take a look.
The original pump had an aluminum housing. You should take a look to see what's in there before ordering parts. If the aluminum housing is still there, order a complete water pump kit which comes with a plastic housing with stainless steel liners. If it has already been changed to the plastic housing, all you need is a new impeller....one for the plastic pump. I believe the complete pump kit is part number 439140 from an Evinrude dealer, but verify that.
