Another wet transom question.

I have an late sixties 16' Lynn Craft. The transom has a slight bit of flex in it when I put the motor up and push down on it. I drilled some holes today to check and see if there was moisture and the shavings came out dark and wet. So I know there is moisture in the transom.
I am thinking of having a stainless bracket made that would be like a motor bracket and spread the load over the transom, and I plan on bolting thru both sides to add strength. There are no cracks in the fiberglass. The motor is a earl sixties Mercury 50hp.

I plan on only having the boat for another year or so. Is this a safe and decent idea.

Re: Another wet transom question.

How is the boat used? If you are just fishing and not doing Hole shots and Pulling Skiers and Tubing! and just EASING around in her then, MAYBE you could get by with it for another season, doing the Temporary FIXES you describe. They are NOT recommended here on iBoats and will not FIX the boat but will help spread the load a bit as LONG as you are not putting any undo stress on the transom. IF you are doing the above activities then in NO WAY should you attempt them with the perscribed FIX. IT WILL NOT WORK!!!

Re: Another wet transom question.

Due to the age of the motor I never even put it up to full throttle. I use it on small lakes for fishing. I never hardly use the motor for more than 5 to 10 minute rides to the next spot. There is no tubing or skiing going on. I figured a sheet metal bracket that slides over the transom and bolted together would be plenty strong enough. I put a pressure treated board across the top and tightened the bolts down and that made it very solid so guessing the metal would be even better.
