So I've been staring at this thing on my skeg (sounds bad, doesn't it). I know it's effect, it has to send some thrust to starboard, pushing the bow starboard. What I don't know, is why is it there. It's hard to tell, but I can't see any thing bent. The trim tab is missing, not sure if it originally came with one.

The skeg was dinged prior to my purchase, so it's possible it has to do with/correct that. Just curious if anyone knows for sure, or has seen/used one.

The boat runs dead straight, tops out about 62, and I'm not looking to change a thing. :D Just curious. Thanks!

Looks like a bolt on skeg guard. I've seen them in Cabelas et al. There's one with the name wait for it..............Skeggard (sp?). Pretty original, huh?

A skeg gaurd would cover the whole skeg or I would think the front of it. That looks to be on the rear of the skeg. Could it be to offset the torque of the prop to help in maintaining a true straight forward motion? That would seem to make more sense. I know people jump through hoops to get the best performance out of their "fishing" boats. The first one to the hole and all that:D;).

I strongly suspect this was the previous owners attempt to repair some skeg damage. The most likely cause was backing into a submerged rock or other solid object.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it I say. As long as your performance is good and the boat isn't pulling hard to one side or the other, I'd leave it alone. As DIY fixes go, it doesn't look too bad.

Like thad said..........offset the torque of the prop to help in maintaining a true straight forward motion?

Thanks, about what I figured. I'm not touching it, as I'm very happy with how it runs. Just curious as I said.

Sometimes I have to fight being an engineer when the motto is:

"If it ain't broke, keep screwing with it untill it is"

Thanks again.

It's a home made trim tab, just a piece of sheet matal screwed to the trailing edge of the skeg...pretty simple and slick! Some of the new outboards have a slightly curved skeg to counter the torque from the prop.
