In the adults only section on winterization, the part about adding stabil to the gas tank, then topping off. Is this just to mix the stabilizer in the tank, or is this also intended to reach the carburetor and have the fuel in the carb stabilized also?

also, "fogging oil" just squirt into the front 2 barrels on a 4 barrel carb?....any particular type of oil?

help appreciated

Re: Another Winterizing Question

There are many opinions on using fuel stabilizers, and most boaters think it helps. It cannot hurt your motor, but using a full tank of 100% gasoline is very desirable. Stabil actually begins to break down faster than 90/10 gas, but its real plus is to turn water (vapor) into burnable alcohol. And yes, you want to run your motor long enough to get it through your fuel system--if even running on water muffs.

As far as the fogging oil, the jury's out on that. Many with 2 stroke outboard motors can easily cut off their fuel supply, and can fog their engine when it starts to stumble. You cannot easily cutoff the fuel to your motor while it's running.

My Bennington lives in a boathouse slung 3' out of the water, and the Mid South is not as harmful of weather as for example, Minnesota. I'm going to fill up my tank with 100% gasoline and keep my battery on a Battery Tender. Other than an oil, filter and lower unit grease change, that's the extent of my winterizing.

Re: Another Winterizing Question

The procedures about topping off the tank were written when gasoline was about $2/gallon. Now that it is $4/gallon and ethanol is prevalent, the "tank empty" strategy is becoming more popular. your choice.

So - full tank = empty wallet . . . empty tank = full wallet. (I usually throw a few cans of 'dry gas' in there for the winter)

Fogging oil is just that . . . usually sold in aerosol cans that say "fogging oil" . . . in a pinch, you could use 2-cycle oil, as that is what is generally used for MPI engines.
