I have a 92 stern drive, my problem is the shifter in the out drive keeps freezing up, almost after every use,I keep the boat on a trailer and use it maybe once a month. I brought the boat home from the mechanic last yearafter he supposedly split the drive and wire wheeled the fork and whatever else, the boat sat through the winter and first start up in spring--frozen solid, brought it back he did the wire wheel and grease job, shifted great, 30 days later after running it on the trailer with a hose--frozen solid, this has been going on for 2 to 3 years. what do you think?? They tell me its a design flaw, the exhaust blows right on the fork and shaft causing corrosion, and thats the way this yamaha works. thanks for any opinions

I am not the original owner, but the first year I owned it, It shifted into gear like butter. I don't believe its a flaw, but how could it possibly freeze up so often?? And with only hose water running thru the engine

Re: Another yammie stern drive question

All the mechanic is doing is cleaning up the corrosion and putting it back together. What needs to be done is the drive split again and the bushings that the fork sits in needs to be drilled out just a size bigger. This stops that problem that units in salt water has. Corrosion between the bushing and the alum housing is causing a squeeze to be placed on the fork. Easier to drill out the bushing than pull the bushing, clean out the corrosion and reinstall a new bushing.

Thanks Capt Ken for taking the time and helping out, I am going to relay that to the mechanic and see where it goes. I'll post the outcome. Hopefully I will be on my way to happy land with your info

Capt Ken; Parts that have been changed to address the freezing problem are;
gear shift
washer
gear shaft
washer
shift rod
It still freezes,should these parts in your opinion have been changed? and the only option I have is to drill the bushing one size larger?

Thank you

Re: Another yammie stern drive question

Makes me wonder where they got those parts. Yamaha doesn't have them anymore. Nothing was wrong with the parts except they had some corrosion on the brass or stainless. Easy to clean and the new ones will be corroded in a short while. All that is needed is to hone out the bushing. Also the slide on the south end of the cable likes to corrode up where it slides back over the cable. I usually remove it and drill it out another size to give it more room. I think the engineers in Japan engineered their parts a little too perfect. Didn't give them room to grow. I remember back in 91 when I went to the first Yamaha sterndrive school, the instructor (who use to work for mercruiser) told us when shimming the drive that if we got it within .005-.006 of what the book called for, live with it cause its already closer than Mercruiser or OMC. Trying to get things to Yamaha's spec's was near impossible.
