Lifted out my boat at the end of the season and the outdrive was basically looking like bush. So enough is enough, for the next season will paint my outdrive with antifouling. There's not much on that in youtube so not sure how it would be correct - scuff with 3M pads, prime with 2 part epoxy and then antifouling? Or without primer? And what about the bellows and hydraulic lines and swivel bolts etc?

Before you do, have it serviced, pull the drive and make sure everything is in good order. I hate it when they come in with fresh paint and have to pull them and service them.

Get a quart of Trilux 33 outdrive Antifouling and a cheapo HVLP spray gun. Thin the paint as needed.

Prep as you see fit, just make sure there are no oily surfaces on the outdrive.

You'll want to raise the outdrive a bit and turn to both port and starboard to spray into the bellows and transom assembly areas. Also spray inside the intake holes as best you can. Some folks spray the propeller(s) with zinc/galvanizing spray rather than the outdrive paint.

Spray the trim cylinder areas with the outdrive in the full down position so as not to get the paint on the ram rods.

Add your anodes after all the painting is done.

Don't buy the aerosol cans of outdrive anti-fouling . . . huge waste of $$ IMO.

Spraying antifouling paint on an outdrive is not sufficient. You will have a barnacle-fest at the end of the season.

Clean it, service it and install it. Now prep it for paint. Brush aluminum primer on it, making sure to cover all the bare spots. 2 coats if necessary. Now brush Trilux, 2 coats also.

Make sure to pull the water intake gratings on Alpha drives and scrape out the barnacles. A lot of barnacles build up in the water intake passage, under the water pump. One would need to pull the pump base and gratings and use a screwdriver to scrape 'em out.
