Volvo Penta AQ125A/270... Antifreeze is leaking from my closed system and I've traced it to the water pump. I don't hear any noise or anything else. I will change the water pump gasket but is there anything else that could be causing this or that I should look for?

If it's coming out near the shaft it's probably the shaft seal

Please, can I get more info on the shaft seal you mention. The Seloc manual only shows how to take off the circulating pump and nothing more.

Is the shaft seal an easy repair or do you have to have special tools to replace it?

If it's not too difficult, what is the procedure?

Do you know the part number for the seal?

Is this the most likely problem causing this leak or might there be others?

Harris

The shaft seal is part of the water pump assembly usually. It is like an o-ring that goes between the spinning shaft of the water pump and the water pump body (casting)

If you are leaking from the center of the water pump, it is that seal. If you are leaking from the edges, then it is gasket.

For the amount of work to get the water pump off, I would just replace it with a new one for piece of mind and confidence.

I got a new water pump for mine really cheap from NAPA Auto. They also sell marine parts

good luck and remember to torque it back on properly or you could end up with a cracked water pump

If you run that auto pump in salt water, it will eat it up in no time. Get a pump with Stainless backing plate, ceramic seals, SS or cast impeller

I am sure he said it was a closed system and was circulating anti-freeze, not seawater.

Whoops...closed system..., and the way that was worded at Napa wasn't clear. And it also don't hurt to mention it. Lots of people read these post. :D
