I am currently using a Sony Pyxis GPS which,Although,a little long on the tooth works well for my purposes, the possitional displays are good and accurate, how accurate are the speed read outs. I use this system instead of a speedometer, this particular has the options of showing knots, mph, or kmh is it acceptable to use this speed display instead of the normal style speedo, any body else out there using a Sony Pyxis IPS 760.If so how do / did you find this unit. Re: Anutha gps question.

GPS is far more accurate than any other method of speed measurement, JC. The accuracy is inherent in the system and isn't related to what instrument you are using. The speed is speed in three dimensions and isn't affected by wind, tide or current.

Good luck. :)

Re: Anutha gps question.

I agree with JB if you are looking for speed over ground. If you need speed thru water then should use the speedo or a paddle wheel speed. GPS speed much more accurate in a lake or body of water with no current. However trolling for salmon in the mouth of a river and wanting a water speed of 3 MPH then with a 4.5 MPH current you will actually be moving backwards. Your water speed 3 miles per hour but your ground is 1.5 MPH in the down current direction.

Re: Anutha gps question.

Thank you both for your very informative reply this has definetely resolved some uncertainties I had regarding GPS speed indication.I am purely using the Gps speed indication for navigational purposes I am in the process of buying a fish finder that I want to use for speed of the hull through water depth below hull as well as water temperature some of these units are very expensive here in South Africa because of dealers excessive mark up 500% to 600% markup on landed costs. IT may be worth my while to import direct from the USA and pay the freight, I am sure I will save my self a lot of money , what worries me is a warranty claim if any.
once again thank you for the replies and what is a god base line fish finder whith the features I mentioned. or should I go for multiple instruments.
Regards William Wright
