Yamaha 150 2 stroke. Can i use any 80/90 wt gear lube for the bottom end or do I need to use yamalube? Is it specifically a marine blend and what characteristics make it a marine blend? thanks

i have a mercrusier motor. and i find that the price between mercury oil and non mercury isnt that much.... same probably goes for yamaha... the yamaha stuff will be designed for marine use.. which is what you want, dont use car/truck gear oil.

any marine specific gear oil will work.

The marine lower unit oils have special corrosion and wear inhibitors in them. I've used a variety of Marine lower unit oils including the Walmart brand and never had any problems. Better stick with the Marine oil. You probably only change the oil once or maybe twice a year and the difference in oil prices is not worth a new set of gears and bearings. Good Luck!

Agree with the above..and you may also consider synthetic. I have converted all my marine and other oils over to synthetic. When my 4 strokes were converted I picked up 200 rpm at wot....
I use Castrol oils.

Just get the "hypoid gear oil" type at Wal Mart or any autoparts store and you will be fine. Also one of my boats is a Yamaha 150. Its never seen "YamahaLube". 1500+ hours on my personal boat.
