I grew up in Santa Monica, have since moved to Salt Lake City. I made several trips as a kid to Catalina on different boats with buddies. The problem for me now is that being older and a boat owner, I want to do the same thing. I know it would be a long haul from Utah, but do some research via net. Chk out "boat camping Catalina" or similiar. You should find help there. You will want to leave real early and either stay overnight and come back early before the afternoon wind hits. What kind of boat are you piloting? How long is your trip planned for? fishing? , chk out the regs before, they are very strict on stuff, esp if you try to camp ashore.
