Two kind members on this forum, just advised me I have a 1987 Johnson 88 special, instead of a 1990 as I was led to believe by seller. I will be contacting the seller, and would appreciate knowing the difference in the model years. Thanks.
I don't believe you'll find any significant differences between the years. These were workhorse motors and didn't change a lot. You can go to the Blue Book listings and get a price for each to see what the price difference is, but I think the prices are low for a motor in good condition, myself. You were still decieved though and the guy needs to pay for that.
Welcome to the forum. "Special" just designates an engine that uses pre-mix fuel. Dosn't have a VRO. They're also known as "Commercial" engines. Identical in all other respects.
The commercial series were motors with different horsepower ratings and heavy duty gearcases.

The specials were the 'no frills' plain-jane motors that had horsepower ratings that ended with 8; 28, 48, 88. There was also a 112.
