Any Charter captains here?

Im looking for any and all info on what it takes to get a captains license in Florida.. any first hand knowledge or ideas on what you should have and could have done but didnt do? Its always been a dream of mine to relocate south and run my own charter, while Im still a good ways away from doing it, I would like to start getting my ducks in a row.

Any info would be greatly apprecaited. Good and bad

There are many courses you may take. The license in through the USCG, not by state. I went to Chapmans School of Seamanship in Stuart (Port Salerno) FL. Getting a license is the easy part. I spent 2 years with an old salt that didn't have a license. He taught me more than the school. Good Luck!

Im kind of hoping to do the same Sasto, I currently live in the north and I am unemployed (building trades usually slow down in the winter months)..My gf just accepted a job and relocated to Boynton Beach Fla. Im hoping to head down to see her and I would like to try and jump on a boat and be a helper and learn the ropes. Ive been on and/or owned boats all my life up here and have also done charter fishing on the gulf side out of Sarasota. I imagine I wouldnt make much money but the experience would be worth it 10 fold.

There are a couple schools in that area, especially Fort Lauderdale. Shoot me a PM if you head this way. I may be able to help you out.

I got my "Six Pack" in Ft. Lauderdale about 30 years ago. Did the USCG school and mated on a charter boat for some minimum time with an endorsement from the Skipper. Then I took the test. It was easy for me, but then I am a master test taker.
