What sort of damage can it do if you are running a older 4 cylinder on 3 cylinders(no choice-to get back to the dock safely)?
The 1st cyl read when running, and all 4 plugs in, only 60 the others around 120.But when all plugs out and turning motor over only 5 on 1st( the rest are ok).
I have heard others speak on being on the water on 3 but I didnt think that was healthy on the engine.
Any help is appreciated.

Re: any damage done? 3cyl

Laker,

If I have read this right, you ran back in on only 3 cylinders. Then did a compression test with one spark plug removed and a compression gauge installed. You then started the engine and got a reading on the compression gauge. You did this for each cylinder.

You then did a correct compression reading for all cylinders. Let me expalin had to do a compression test properly.

1. Run the engine until it is warm. On the flushers is sufficent.
2. Remove all spark plugs.
3. Open the throttle fully.
4. With compression gauge installed in one of the cylinders, crank engine for about 4-5 compression cycles.
5. Read and record compression pressure.
6. Move to the next cylinder and repeat steps 4 and 5.

Ok, on to the next question. Was it health to run the engine on 3 cylinders? If it got you out of harms way, definitely! Engines are re-buildable/replaceable. You aren't!

What happens when you run an engine with one cylinder down? The lack of pressure from a power stroke in that cylinder will mean that water can be sucked into the cylinder as the exhaust port opens. That water will make its way to the crankcase and possibly damage the crankshaft bearing surface, connecting rod and likely score the cylinder walls. How much, if any, damage has been done will only be determined by stripping down the engine and assessing it. With a compression pressure of 5 on that cylinder, I'd say a fair amount of damage has been done. Time start learning about how to do a rebuild. Or find a reputable workshop and have the work done. Depending on the age and value of the engine it may be more prudent to find another engine.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

Chris...........
