Hey guys was wondering if any of you are experienced in Gel-coating boats? I have a friend of mine inquiring in regards to painting a new gel coat on top of a decent paint job on his bass boat at this time.

Thanks, Chris

If you described what he wants to do accurately, it can't be done. Gel coat can't be applied over paint, they aren't compatible.

you would need to sand all the paint off, down to bare fibreglass, and then spray the gellcoat.... 'Oops' probably has the most experiance with gellcoating here, he re gelcoated his now 23' searay. Look back for the Hull Extension thread.. might be back afew pages

Wow, i didn't realize that, man alive,, what a J O B to sand an entire boat, is there any alternative that is compatible with paint that would give one the aesthetics and durability of a gel-coat.

Thanks, Chris

You still need to sand the entire boat and depending on the current paint it may need to removed completely if its not compatible with the new paint.

Truefire - Interlux makes a product called Perfection for doing exactly what you're talking about (they're not gelcoat, and you don't have to sand off the old stuff - just scuff it and get it ready for paint).

You want to look for marine "topside" paints. Rustoleum reportedly makes something good, too.

We don't know what type of paint is on the boat right now, so there's no way to say Perfection can be used over it at this time.
