Well, just got everything bolted back on the boat after replacing the gimbal bearing and impeller. Greased up the gimbal bearing and when I pulled the gun away. . . blue grease? Some idiot, don't know who that would be since I'm the only one here, marked the grease guns wrong. So now my gimbal bearing is shot full of Quicksilver engine coupler spline grease and I have an unused tube of Quicksilver u-joint/gimbal bearing grease in a different gun.
The way I look at it my choices are:
1. Yank the bearing out, clean the grease out and reinstall. Since pulling the bearing is hell on the bearing, might as well just do #2 below.
2. Leave it alone and when it starts to make noise, replace it.
3. Pump a ton of gimbal bearing grease in to replace the spline grease. That way I'll have lots of spline grease on the spline, wrong side of the bearing/grease seal of course, and the bearing will be packed full with bearing grease and some spline grease.
4. Buy a new bearing, wait forever for it to arrive and redo the entire job.
How good is the spline grease at lubing bearings?
Any ideas anyone? Smart***** responses are always welcome.
