Well today we are really going to start checking and repairing this motor to hopefully get it actually running! We now have bought the pressurized tank, the new gaskets etc for the pressurized tank, new double fuel hose, and a new water pump impeller and a new lower end seal kit. And we also got our Seloc manual for our motor. However it is still hard to grasp some things when you are totally new to outboard repair. This will be a "learning expereience." We almost called it quit last year I think because we had no manual and no real direction. Now that I have read alot on this forum and heard from so many helpful people we feel ready. My question today is what do they mean when the book says apply cement around the gasket, What kind of cement? Also when they say apply a light coat of oil around rubber bushings, what kind of oil? I am a real newbie so please cut me some slack if these are silly questions. And also is the exahust cover something we need to take off for anything specific or only if we find a problem? Thank you.

Gasket cement used to be used a lot. Newer gaskets usually do not need it. However if the book recommends it, use some Permatex HiTack gasket sealant. It comes in a can with a brush in the lid. Soeread it on the gasket (both sides), and stick it to the surface and tighten the bolts.

Use 2 cycle oil for oiling stuff. That is normally what they recommend, although in most applications it doesn't really matter.

agree, you can also use a tube of black permatex, and apply with finger.

My recommendation is to throw your Seloc manual straight into the trash can! :D

You are much better off using an OEM manual for your specific motor - the Seloc books try to cover too many engines and don't do a very good job of telling you how to repair the one you have.

You can obtain an original service manual, or an electronic version of one, via sites like EBay and www.marineengine.com. If you buy a manual on CD, just be careful of what you are getting because there are a lot of people selling bogus manuals.

You have a great little outboard there.
I should know.I've got three of these red beauties (holiday bronze).
Although a manifacturer's manual is always better, these engines with their 1950 technology is so simple that a Seloc manual will do fine.
These engine blocks were made with staying power in mind and they can take a lot of punishment.
If you are talking about the spaghetti seal(thin long piece of rubber) that closes the lower unit you should you should stick to a thick brown goop like sealant that does not harden up, so you will be able to open the lower unit again if needed. You can get a can of this at most marinas and parts stores.
There is one change you may wish to consider. On the propeller shaft there is a single seal that is supposed to keep the oil in and the water out. After 50 years the propeller shaft itself is often a bit worn right where this seal is and this is where it leaks.
A good way to solve this is by replacing this seal by 2 new ones. The new seals are not as thick as the 1957 ones and they fit where there used to be only one.
Put one facing outward to keep water out and the other facing inward to keep the oil in.
Do not mess with the exhaust cover unless you absolutely have to.The bolts holding the cover will often break off and that means trouble.
You can solve the carbon buildup in the exhaust by decarbing with seafoam.
It is meant for the pistons but on its way out it does a nice job on the exhaust as well.
Good luck!!!!

That's a great tip on the seals, rollmops! Can you tell us which ones to use? Are they for the later model 35hp motors or the 28/33hp models?

The seals are the replacement seals of the original ones.It is just that the factory started making them thinner thereby making it possible to use 2 instead of one.I guess it was unintended, but it works!
