Looking to make some sort of AM antenna that I can hook up to the radio at work. I need to go about 20' to get to the window to get out from under the steel roof. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

Your radio has a collapsible antenna now?

Get some 2 wire ribbon cable, like they used for TV antennas, bare the ends, wrap around the radios antenna, string it over to the window.

sorry, I am thinking thats for the FM band

Just borrowed this from another site.

You will have to inductively couple your radio. You do this by creating a smaller loop that has a feed line to your radio. This smaller loop is placed in the center or near the antenna. A signal is then inductively coupled onto the smaller loop and runs to the back of your radio.
Make sure your smaller loop does not touch or short out to the antenna

Do a websearch for something like "AM antenna DXing" or "DX antennae".

I use a little $10 old-style portable Sony radio that is very good at picking up stations, no external antenna needed. I think Sony has quit making them, but you can still get them through retail outlets (Amazon, Kmart, etc). Model is ICF-S10MK2, picks up as well as $100 radios.

For mid-band am frequency of 1000Kz the 1/8 wavelength is 125 feet. Using a dipole you can cut that down to 75'. Of course you can go to the fifth or sixth harmonic and make it shorter

Will not work in a steel building, Tried it.

Pretty easy fix. Line losses are not as critical on Kz as opposed to Mz. Cheap TV twin-flat 300 ohm cable hung outside of building is all you need. If this is an industrial building you may need to feed the antenna with coax to shield out noise.

OK. Just thought I'd suggest it, since it is the only radio that works inside my (brick) building at work, and it works inside the steel quonset at the farm. It is small/portable enough to fit in some corner that may have slightly better reception (you can always run speaker cable to a remote speaker).

Also, try setting two good radios next to each other - one will serve as an inductive antenna for the other and improve reception. Additionally (I'm sure you know this already), AM reception is very sensitive to orientation of the antenna (in this case, the position/orientation of the radio itself).
