I picked up an '89 merc 2.2 hp a couple of years ago, and have been trying to get it running right ever since. It's apparently made by tohatsu, and damn near everything is NLA. The points were on that list, so I replaced them with a Nova 2 ignition module. It ran great for a little bit, until it just died. The ignition system is magneto powered, but has an external coil. The way I understand it I get a pulsed low voltage signal from the magneto coil to the secondary coil, which has both primary and secondary windings. The coil has only one white wire in, the spark plug wire out, and is (i assume) grounded through the bolt holes. Resistance from the white wire to the bolt holes =0, from the spark plug lead to bolt holes = 5 ohms, and from spark plug to white wire = 5ohms. None of these values seems right.
Anyway, I think I need a new coil, but it's NLA. Wondering if an OMC coil would work. I don't know much about the OMC ignitions, but they don't seem as goofy as the mercs. What I think i need is:
External coil pack (ie, separate from the magneto)
From a magneto powered engine
CDI: I don't know if I could use a CDI coil or not. I'm guessing not, since the input voltage into the coil would be much higher. Are the CDI systems used exclusively with 12v, or are they magneto powered as well?
Oh, and single cylinder. Probably not an issue, since I'm guessing each cylinder has its own coil, but who knows.
