Re: Any buddy had one

I'm pretty sure what you have is a very heavy duty, very wide 14' john boat. Ordinarily a 14 footer shouldn't have anything bigger than a 25, but I believe yours is built to handle a 25-40 with 25-30 being optimal. With regard to payload she should be good for 700-800 pounds; maybe more, but I don't want to be the one to encourage overloading. I'm guessing the capacity plate is MIA, otherwise you wouldn't be asking us to guess on her specs. You correctly surmise that stick steer would be a good choice for that boat. Tiller steer would be great as well. You've got a great utility boat. I'm jealous. Post some pics when you get a chance so I can be sure you have what I think you do. Right now all my speculation is predicated on an assumption.

square bow or V?
We have a wide body 14' Lowe jon (square). We found the 25 was too fast for young or inexperienced operators; a 15 is better. 9.9 works fine if you are restricted. However, safety wise, you can put a larger motor when you have a steering wheel.
good for three people but we often carried more if they were children, in safe conditions. 2 adults in unsafe conditions.
The nice thing about a 15 is that it's a pull start and you don't have to mess with a battery, and it's easier to remove for storage, etc.

Yeah, most 14' flatbottoms are unsafe with anything larger than a 20. I just think this one is an exception. I could be wrong.

It is a V bottom boat with a wide gunnel that really looks like it helps stiffen the transom. There is also bracing in the corners and to each side of center of the floor to the transom.

Is the serial number not located on the capacity plate?

Mine has brown and yellow stripes with the word Grumman on the bare aluminum hull.My serial number plate is outside the transom starboard side and the data plate(decal) is on inside the port side next to the transom. My boat has three bench seats that I added swivel seats to it and was bare ribs until I added a floor and carpet. The inside is brown and white speckled factory paint. I run a 1990 25hp Merc tiller with electric start.I originally had a 25hp 1980's Johnson on it. In the 25 or so years I've had it,no complaints,it's been a good simple and reliable boat.
