Hi, I'm looking to purchase my first boat, a life long dream of my father's and I. We came across a Glastron sx 170 2005 purchased brand new in 2007 selling for $12 000 CAD that we'd like to haul with our hyundai Tucson 4 cylinder, I was wondering your feedback on this boat in comparison to Bayliner's or Stingray's equivalent models..

:)

I am a fan of older Glastron boats. They used to be a classy looking, light, fast boat. Having gone through several ownership changes, I can not comment on the newer ones but they do look pretty.

BUT a Hyunday 4 cylinder? I think it is only rated to tow something like 1000 pounds and your Glastron will be well over that. When I went to look at a Tucson or Santa Fe--I don't remember which, the 6 was only rated for 2000 pounds. Even if to four is rated higher than 1000, I think it is an unsuitable tow vehicle. BUT If that's what you have---sometimes you need to "make-do."

As to the Glastron, why don't you go over to the Classic Glastron site and ask about it?

Depends on what motor is in the Glastron. Price seems high if it's the 4 cyl 3.0.

And take it from someone who has towed with an inadequate tow vehicle....that boat is way too much for the Tucson. Either get yourself a beater full size truck or consider purchasing a smaller, lighter aluminum boat. I was never a "truck guy" but after having difficulties towing, launching, and retrieving my boat with my V6 Buick I bought a 1990 full size chevy truck. Let me tell you it has been great having a truck around not just for the boat but for all the other incidental hauling I now have the capability to do.

Thanks for your reply..with a trailer brake i can tow 1500 pounds with the Tucson 4cylinder, unfortunately I got it only 2 years ago and can't trade it in right now..the boat with motor weighs 2500pounds.. i've never towed anything so don't know if 1000 pounds over capacity can be supported on occasion or not? The 6 cylinder santa fe tows about 3500pounds for only about 100$ CAD more a month..that's what I'm considering right now.

Price on the boat also seems high to me. it's a rough sellers market - if it's what you want, throw a number at 'em and see what happens BUT before you do you need to get this tow vehicle thing worked out...

I say no way on the 4 cyl Santa Fe and (if it were me) also the v6. Throw in the trailer weight, fuel, people in the vehicle, then load the boat down with all the must haves (the list goes on and on, believe me) and you're probably well over the 6's limits too.

I just went through this so trust me - take the time now to study up on all the tow limts/ratings etc. and what they mean BEFORE you buy anything. There's a lot more that goes into it than just a vehicle's tow rating, there's GCWR, GVWR, tongue weight, etc.

In the end, a boat is not an item to buy on impulse.

Re: Any suggestions on the Glastron SX170?

I have a 2001 Glastron SX 175, and love it. Mine doubles as a family tubing boat, and my fishing boat.

My 175 has a dry weight of 1,980 lbs (boat and motor). That is with a Volvo 3.0L I/O. I figure with the trailer, and stuff I'm probably towing around 2,800 lbs. The 170 is the outboard version of the same boat - so I would have thought it would weigh less than mine(?) What type of motor does it have? Does that 2,500 include the trailer?

I would definitely go through a towing capacity worksheet. There are a number of free spreadsheets out there. Make sure you include coolers, people and stuff in the vehicle, gas in the boat, etc. Once you know your requirements, you can figure out which vehicles can safely tow it...

Thanks for the great info.. Is $10 500 canadian dollars too much for a 2005 purchased in 2007? I looked around and there's nothing at hat price.. ie. $8500US

That sounds a good deal more reasonable.

Took a look at your '66 starcraft and wanted to know if you are selling it as I am looking for a boat.

I will be selling it at some point in the future when I move up to a larger bowrider but that's probably a couple years away. Where are you located? I could check out Craigslist in your area to see if there's any good looking deals near you.

That sounds reasonable to me - but I haven't been paying attention to boat prices lately.

I bought my 2001 175 for $9K in January of 2008. I'm sure I could have found something equivalent for a bit cheaper, but, the boat was/is in really good shape, and the marina offers a really good warranty on their used boats. This is my first "real" boat, and I was buying in the winter time - so the warranty was important to me. Also, my boat has a seating arrangement that I was looking for - with removeable stern seats around the ending doghouse - so I have more floor space if I am fishing, and can put the seats back in when towing the family around...

1999 Glastron SX170 - 150Evinrude - $9500????

Hi Guys,

Just looking to get some feedback from everyone. Looking at a 99 Glastron sx170 with a 150. Interior is a year old and comes with a new snap on top. $9500 seems a bit high for a 11 year old boat. I'm in the Milwaukee area. Thanks...

Re: Any suggestions on the Glastron SX170?

I have a few suggestions:

1. You really need to decide on how you want to use the boat and what your budget is.

2. You absolutely need to ensure your Tow vehicle is up to the job. Making comments like you'll only be 1000 pounds over the tow capacity is just a recipe for absolute disaster. I would do some more research on towing, tow capacity, etc before you blow money on a boat.

Happy hunting.
