This weekend I'm pulling the top off my 15 1/2' Steury and getting at the transom repair I'm planning on cutting 1" around from sides and bottom inside glass would this be a good idea or should I go as close as possible any thoughts or tips for repairing the complete transom would be greatly received Thanks

Guess that sort of answers my question ,so your saying it's best to cut the glass as close to the hull as you possibly can,the transom doesn't go below the hull level does it?? where the drain wheel hull v's is I'm not thinking so am I right? Please excuse my ignorance as this is a first for me

Once you have the deck off, the transom is the full height of the hull. You will have to cut out the back foot or so of the floor to entirely replace it.

I left the fibreglass skin of the hull and applied my new plywood trasom to the inside of it after a lot of sanding and prep work.

MercMark I looked at your transom and by the looks the wood does follow the hull right down the drain well to the V bottom, good news is my floor is cut back 1 1/2' back from transom, did you do anything special down in the drain well or the splash well drains on the top deck,I suppose I should template the transom from the back exact to it's shape and trim a bit to fit

Re: Any tips cutting out Transom

I pulled the deck off and left it as it was. Down at the drain tube, I had a little brass insert that I cut out with the transom wood. Just like the piece I cut to fit, the previous wood came out all the way down along the contours of the hull.

I made a paper pattern of the inside skin of the hull once the wood was out. I too wasn't sure if I should pattern before or after. I bought "Runabout Renovation" and he said make the pattern from the inside of the hull skin.

I made two patterns, one aginst the fibreglass skin that was left then a second one after the first layer of plywood was fit.

I measured the angle between the transom and the keel (the amount that the transom is laid back) and cut the bottom edge of the plywood on the same angle to minimize the gaps.

I epoxied the two pieces of plywood together. Generally the recommendation seems to be lay a layer of mat against the skin of the hull, then a layer of plywood, then another layer of mat, then the second layer of plywood, then mat and roving on the inside surface. You lay it all up then clamp it all together using bolts through what holes you have and any clamps you can use.

You drill out the drain holes after it's all cured and insert a brass fitting for the bilge and I had a screw toghether plastic fitting for the spalshwell drain that I plan to reuse.

If you're good with doing gelcoat repairs, there may be no reason not to cut the whole thing out.

What I've read up on that is, leave the corners and a bit of the fibreglass so you have the structural integrity of the original corners still in tact.

Wouldn't you want to leave an inch or so inside so you can bond to it w/o having to grind into the sides and make the inside radius' when re-glassing? I'm pretty sure that's how Bruce McDougul does it during his complete rehab of a big old Bayliner in his Video "Fiberglass repair with Bruce McDougul" If I get a chance I'll rewatch that portion and report back.

Just cut all of that inside glass out. There is no benefit to leaving the lip. When you glass in the new transom, you can build up those inner corners with as much roving and mat as you feel like, and have a better end result. Good luck...
