Any transom problems with Crestliners?

I went last weekend to look at a '97 Sportfish 2050. It has a 150 hp Johnson on it, and a 15 hp kicker, which is mounted on an OMC bracket. I noticed a weld on the outside of the top portion of the transom (port side). It was around an inch and a half long, and looked like some sort of repair. I asked the guy, who says he has owned the boat since new, and he said that a crack started developing and they fixed it under warranty. He also said that subsequent years of this boat had some sort of "plate"(?) installed on the inside of the transom by the factory. Does anyone know anything about this? Has anyone had any similar issues with Crestliners of this era? Thanks!

Not of that era, but a newer one. Crestliner had to rebuild the transom because it developed a bow in it. I had the max recommended engine it was rated for - not sure if they underdesigned it or what. They did not volunteer any information on why they did it or even acknowledge there was a problem. I assume there was since they completely tore the boat apart to do it.

What's going on here? There were a few more replies to this thread a few days ago, but now they are gone. Did a moderator not like something that was said?

Oh yeah, you're right, SBN! Sorry about that. By Friday, I am a little "off". . . .

One of those 2150 Sportfish? Those are sweet! I can't believe how much room they have in them. I can't quite stomach the sticker price though. . . . Most of the ones I've seen are outfitted with Verados too, and those things are about the same size as my old VW Beetle! I'm still toying with the idea of this used 2050, but I definitely want more details about exactly what was repaired and how!

Actually, the 202 Tourney SC...a true 20ft'r I guess, but rated for 250...seemed like a 225H.O. E-tec would've been a nice match..
I called the dealer I'd been working with on this, and he said he knew of no transom problems on the 202, but was aware of a few that needed factory repair in other Models...

It's that "needed factory repair" thing that scares me. Wonder if there is anybody at the manufacturer I could talk to and get some more details that may help to set my mind at ease? I had my old Alumacraft out on the river yesterday doing some walleye fishing (to no avail, but what a nice day out on the river!), and saw a 2050 Sportfish just like the one I'm considering. That Tourney you're looking at must be a side console, huh? That's what my 185 Competitor is, but I want a walk-through windshield model so I can fish more comfortably in the colder weather months and also have a bimini to get out of the sun while trolling.

The 202 has the walk-thru option and yes, I'd go that route for water protection in rough water more than anything.

Hey Fargin, what is the SST that you and radioactive were talking about on the other thread? Is that the box like device that extends rearward that the motor mounts to? I just bought a 1992 Eagle and am concerned / curious about it.

Re: Any transom problems with Crestliners?

The boat in question had a cracked weld where the gusset connects the transom to the hull. The dealer that made the repair actually went overboard in the repair and made it stronger than it was originally from the factory. This was done three years ago, not the slightest hint of a problem since...This can be verified by calling the dealer at 313-842-0268,ask for dave. Bob

Yeah rottenray, that's it. Your Eagle is probably just like my mom's. She has had it since it was new, fishes it all the time in the ocean and has had zero problems with it that I know of. The only complaint I've heard from her is that they have had some issues with the paint on their Eagle. I don't know if this is due to the saltwater or just a problem Crestliner had with their painting process.
Hey Bob, I guess you found me! I've been meaning to call you to ask more details about that repair, but have been super busy lately and still haven't found any serious buyers for my boat. I'm taking it today to a local boat sale (a charity event), but it is raining (STILL!!), so most people are probably staying home and working on their arks. Talk to you soon, and take care.

Re: Any transom problems with Crestliners?

Thanks fargin, I inspected the weld this past weekend all the way around and didn't see any cracks. It's good to know your Mom ahsn't had any trouble with hers. I've only had mine out twice and so far I like it alot. The only complaint I have is it doesn't have much storage so everything gets tossed in the cabin. I knew that when I bought it so it really can't count as a problem with the boat!
