Any Wakeskaters out there?

This looks like too much fun ... I'm learning boarding and surfing this year, but now the wakeskating has caught my eye and may be my next demise! Now, explaining yet another board that IS differrent, but to my wife, the same. :facepalm:

I'm wondering if I can take a cheap, standard ocean skimming board to learn this? Although skimming boards are all flat, I believe.

I have just been learning to wake board this summer and I am with you, the wake skate looks like fun. I just dont know if i will ever be able to get up on that tiny little board since i am a bigger guy. I saw my local Academy had some on sale the other day might be worth it to just pick on up and give it a try.

Before ever getting a wake skake we pulled the bindings off of one of our wake boards and just rode it like a wakeskate to get the feel. You get pretty good traction on a wake board bare foot so that wasn't an issue. Plus a wakeboard is bigger so you can get the take off part under control before you step down to the smaller wakeskate.

Have fun! but be careful on wipe outs cause you have little control to where the board will go when you fall. Don't want to take a hit from your board to the dome.

That is a pretty good suggestion. I have a wake board with cheap bindings on it that i dont use anymore i could even throw some grip tape on there to help.

I feel like a toe side spill on a wake skate might not be as bad as a wake board since you are not attached to the board, but like you said as long as the board does not flip up and hit you in the head.

I used my ocean skim board no problem. In fact I have a wakeskate, too. The skim board is unique - no fins; easier to do surface spins, but more loose on the turns. Definitely fun to do either skate or skim. Wipe outs tend to hurt less, too.

Thanks folks, guess I'm not the only one looking for options ... I just have never found my comfort spot in the bindings of a board and prefer my feet loose. Good idea Redneck that may be my second option, although I believe I'll pick up an inexpensive skimmer as Ryansdata did, and give it a go this weekend! I'll cover the noggi'n going down.

Getting up is the same as the wakeboard. I wakesake barefoot or with my vibram five finger. I have not even had the wakeboard out this year, wakeskate only for me.
