i am trying to use the wire harness and boat controls harness from a 1981
merc 402 and im trying to use it on my 1978 distributor style mariner 1150,
since my 1150 wire harness and boat harness are garbage, and i have these
here in shop....
i took your advice. i have a internal engine harness from my 1981 merc 402
40hp 2 cylinder.

i have the following wire colors:
yellow /red
yellow / blk
black /red X2
grey
black /white
black
red x2

my question is this......
what connections are needed on my inline 6 1150 1978 , distributor style,
and what colors would be appropriate from the 1981 wire harness im now going
to use? does that make sense?

i know i need a constant hot on the switchbox red term, a switched hot on
the switchbox white term, a temparary ignition yellow for the selenoid, and
of course a big red for posotive and a big black for negative. anything
else?

Yellw/red; To starter solonoid
Yellow/black: Stop wire To brown terminal
Black/red: Used on the 40 not the inline
Black/white: Ditto
Grey: Tacho feed
Black: earth
Red: constant 12V
The loom you have does not seem to have switched 12 V, look for a purple wire, it may be taped back
Hope this helps
